Some newborn frequently asked questions that I receive from parents

This is the response to a recent email I received from the excited and a bit apprehensive parents of a newly born
  1. Which medicine or any solution is best to stop the milk spit when a child drinks the milk and spit after drinking it ?

In most cases, NONE. If the baby is gaining weight, then generally no medicine is recommended for REFLUX (spitting milk). A good burp and keeping the child's head elevated after feed, should help reasonably in most cases.
    Read more here
  2. Which medicine is best to control cold ?
In most cases in small babies, just saline nasal drops (NASOCLEAR) are sufficient in treating a mild cold. If the child is irritable, CROCIN drops maybe used too.
  3. Which medicine is best to control cough ?
Small babies less than 6 months old - NONE,
  4. Which medicine is best to control fever ?
CROCIN - Dose is calculated as a simple formula, CROCIN DROPS upto 4 times / day, no. of drops = double the weight, for example 3 kg child = 6 drops, 4 kg child = 8 drops every time, AS NEEDED.
  5. Which medicine is best for control the loose motion ?
SPORLAC / ECONORM packets 1 pkt twice a day mixed with 2 teaspoon of Expressed Breast milk OR boiled & cooled water / filter water.
  6. Which medicine is best for stomach ache ?
COLIC AID drops 3-5 drops 3-4 times/ day
  7. How to recognize stomach ache ?
Can be difficult, excessive crying without any specific cause, like a hungry, thirsty, excessively warm/ cold/ wet child, may all be attributed to stomach ache. Even a pediatrician may not really be sure about a stomach ache in many cases !
  8. What are the other useful tonics for baby's good health ?
None needed for a healthy good weight baby. Only thing I would recommend - MOTHER'S MILK ONLY (nothing else) for the first 6 months of life
  9. What is the tip for shoulder ace ....some time some people says shoulder has moved or changed the place ( Kandha Utar jaana) ?
No medical disease as far as modern medicine goes. If the child appears in pain due to any reason, you can give CROCIN
  10. What are the best powder for making child's health and intelligent ?
None are proved to work, otherwise wouldn't we all be taking them ! EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING for the first 6 months is the BEST gift that you can give to your baby.
Hope this helps :)

I can find colicaid daily dose at many places. But I am not getting clarity on continued usage i.e. can I continue to give this medicine for say 1 month if problem does not solve. My 1 month has been having colicaid on SOS basis for last 20 days. He has finished one 15 ml bottle and is on the second one right now.

You can use Colic aid for a long period of time (say a couple of months) under the supervision of your pediatrician, since colic is normally temporary problem that resolves in most infants as they get older (say 6 months or so),
thanks for reading and commenting on the blog :)

Thank you so much for this post. It is really helpful.

My baby is going to be a month old. She, as many babies of her age, seems to be having some issues with her digestive system. She has gas and passes a little motion (loose) every now and then.

Will ColicAid help her?

My 11/2 mnth baby had immuization. I m giving crocin drops. For how many days and how many times a day should i give him this.

Dr. Gaurav Gupta M.D. said...

Generally we do not recommend Crocin drops routinely for most vaccines,
You should only use it if the baby becomes fussy & cranky or has significant fever.
The dose needs to be given 4-6 hourly (as needed only), and the dose would be mentioned on the bottle itself.
Generally speaking for Crocin (PCM) drops an easy to remember formula is 2 drop per dose for every kilogram of your baby's body weight.
For example if the baby weighs 10 kg, then you need to give 20 drops (~1 ml) every 4-6 hourly as needed.

You can try a few things Imran,
1. Use a humidifier in the baby's room
2. Use a nasal mucus aspirator (suction bulb) after putting the nasal drops
3. Sometimes putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the baby's pillow / clothes may be useful too,

Hello doctor the blood spot seen almost regularly in the poop and in increased amount.endoscopy was done last week doctor said not major problem but may be some allergy issue . So what should I do?? Her 3and half month vaccine is also due yet. Should we wait for complete her course of vaccine ??

Dr. Gaurav Gupta M.D. said...

Milk protein allergy is a very common reason for the same,
If the endoscopy is normal, just milk avoidance should do the trick,
YES, please complete your vaccines,
